Beanies for Athletes: Winter Training Headwear Guide

When temperatures drop below five degrees, a cap is not enough. You need a beanie. But not any beanie - a training beanie that manages heat, wicks moisture, and stays in place during movement.

Training Beanies vs Fashion Beanies

A fashion beanie is thick, cosy, and designed for standing around looking good. A training beanie is thinner, moisture-wicking, and designed for active use. The difference matters when your body temperature rises during a session.

Material Guide

  • Merino wool - the gold standard. Natural temperature regulation, moisture-wicking, anti-odour. Works in cold and mild conditions
  • Technical synthetic - polyester or acrylic blends designed for performance. Quick-dry and affordable
  • Fleece-lined - for extreme cold. Inner fleece for warmth, outer shell for wind resistance
  • Avoid pure cotton - absorbs sweat, gets heavy, takes forever to dry

Fit

A training beanie should fit snug without squeezing. It should cover your ears completely and stay in place during dynamic movements. Too loose and it shifts during running. Too tight and it causes headaches.

When to Choose a Beanie Over a Cap

  • Temperature below 5°C
  • Outdoor running in wind
  • Early morning dark sessions
  • Snow and rain conditions

The Hybrid Option

The Catar Cottega Reflective Balaclava works as both. Rolled up it functions as a beanie. Pulled down it provides full face and neck coverage. The reflective C logo adds visibility for dark training sessions. One piece, two functions.

Coming Soon
