You invest in premium gymwear. Then you throw it in the wash with everything else and wonder why it loses shape after three months. Here is how to wash gym clothes properly.
1. Wash Cold
Always 30 degrees or lower. Hot water breaks down elastic fibres, causes shrinkage, and fades colours faster. Cold water cleans just as effectively for gym clothes - the detergent does the work, not the heat.
2. Turn Inside Out
The inside of your gym clothes takes the most abuse from sweat and body oils. Turning them inside out ensures the dirtiest side gets the most cleaning action. It also protects prints, logos, and outer fabric texture.
3. Skip the Fabric Softener
This is the biggest mistake people make. Fabric softener coats fibres with a waxy layer that blocks moisture-wicking properties. Your premium performance t-shirt becomes a regular cotton tee. Use a sports-specific detergent instead.
4. Air Dry Only
Tumble dryers destroy gymwear. The heat breaks down spandex and elastic, causing permanent loss of shape and compression. Hang dry on a rack or clothesline. It takes longer but your clothes last three times as long.
5. Wash Promptly
Do not leave sweaty gym clothes in your bag overnight. Bacteria multiply rapidly in damp fabric, causing odours that become permanent. Wash within 24 hours of training - or at minimum, hang them to air out.
Proper care doubles the lifespan of your gymwear. A Catar Cottega cap washed correctly keeps its shape for years. The Bullet Vest Sweater maintains its premium feel wash after wash. Treat your gear right and it treats you right.
