European winters are no joke. From the Netherlands to Scandinavia, temperatures drop below zero and daylight disappears by four in the afternoon. But serious athletes do not stop training. They adapt their gear.
Cold weather training is all about layers. Three layers give you flexibility to adjust as your body heats up:
Base Layer
A moisture-wicking performance t-shirt against your skin. This pulls sweat away from your body to prevent that cold, clammy feeling mid-workout. Avoid cotton at all costs.
Mid Layer
A half-zip top or lightweight hoodie for insulation. This layer traps warm air close to your body while allowing moisture to pass through from the base layer.
Outer Layer
A windproof and water-resistant jacket for the elements. This layer blocks wind and rain while letting internal moisture escape. Remove it once you are warmed up.
You lose significant heat through your head and neck. A balaclava solves both problems in one piece. The Catar Cottega Reflective Balaclava provides full coverage for the coldest sessions, and the reflective C logo adds visibility for early morning and evening runs when it is dark.
For milder cold, a premium cap keeps your head warm while allowing heat to escape.
Full-length joggers or thermal leggings. Wind-resistant fabric on the front, breathable fabric on the back. Avoid shorts unless you are doing a short, high-intensity session.
European winters mean training in the dark. Reflective elements on your gear are not optional - they are essential for safety. The Reflective Balaclava catches headlights and streetlights, making you visible without needing a high-vis vest.
Cold weather training builds mental toughness that the gym cannot replicate. When it is dark, wet, and freezing - and you still show up - you build something beyond muscle. You build character.
